Derrick's Image of Ireland shows both a full steel helmet and a leather helmet with steel reenforcing bands. As always, you decide how accurate Derrick's illustrator was.

... Danish Textiles from Bogs and Burials. It's actually made from polar bear skin. I imagine something similar made from an Irish beast with it's full winter coat (any native cattle breeds still extant?) would work. The coat would give extra impact absorbsion over bare leather too. Andrea

I let the belt take alot of the lower part of the weight. Once you are used to the weight its not bad. My Hauburk is flat ring rivited is onlt 23 pounds. Way less than my back pack full of stuff for a week long hike.
