My reaction to this is similar to the issue of the poppy. If you wish to commemorate Irish people who found themselves party to imperialism, do it in a way that doesn't justify and rationalise imperialism. The Guards are trying to say that the Irish state should recognise a moral equivalence between the Black and Tans and the Volunteers.

Mind you, as one commentator said, maybe the former members of the Heavy Gang share an emotional bond with the Tans.

i was in glasnevin on sunday with some friends and happened to get into a chat with a few others at the graves they were locals so i believe when we discussed this issue the general concensus was that it would not last too if placed there, i was surprised with the reaction and have mildly put what their feeling were on the matter.... i think it would be a red rag to a herd of bulls.

This would be like erecting a memorial to the KKK in an African-American cemetery here in the US.
