According to Olaf Goubitz 1991 “Short instructions for making the reconstruction of a shoe from archaeological sources” (emailed off-list) you don’t need anything as complicated as a last. All you need is a “sewing support”, which in the drawing looks like nothing more complicated than a shoe outline cut out of a plank with a jigsaw, nailed to a stand made of bits of scrap wood. Wayne Robinson used it for his last pair of 17thC latchet shoes and said it worked a treat.
Anybody know how to cut’n’paste a drawing out of a PDF?
