Check out http://www.mutr.co.uk - it's pretty amazing. A lot isn't very medieval, but a great example of useful stuff is http://www.mutr.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=7899 - an 'Ivory nut' - a nut that is almost as hard as ivory, can be carved more easily and is more environmentally friendly than killing elephants.
They also have 'fields metal', a hard alloy of tin & indium which melts at 60C. People doing casting at gigs might be able to make up ivory nut moulds, then let kids pour 60C metal into them. I saw mammoth ivory, Sheepskin parchment, Used Vellum and a few others.
I got myself some rare earth magnets and ferrofluid. Seriously fun stuff.
