Give it to a dog for an hour. They tend to pick a bone clean first, then start knawing on it properly.

If leaving outside I'd bury it, (it'll still get cleaned but less likely to attract stray dogs and rats), I've found some beautiful clean bones stuck in the mudbank of a river when the water went down.

How did you clean the cartilage off?

Boil gently with some washing soda, or if you have the time, leave them in the sun, wind and rain.

May favorite way is to put the bones in the dishwasher on "intensive" program. Wonderful results.
Well, no need to say, my wife is not too pleased with this and preferes Billy's method...

So far from testing out my whorls, this is my favourite. It spins really nicely. I just used a small branch of ash, that was in my garden for the spindle.
